The heads and judges of the judicial complex in the city of Taiz, southwest Yemen, announced the suspension of work in the complex from Tuesday, August 5, 2025, in protest against an armed attack carried out by a military force belonging to the 22nd Mechanized Brigade and the kidnapping of two protection officers.
A judicial source told Yemenat that two military crews belonging to the aforementioned brigade, carrying more than 15 armed men, opened heavy fire on the complex on Monday afternoon during an attempted storming with the aim of extracting a prisoner detained by court order.
The source explained that the gunmen attacked military police and central security personnel guarding the compound, and kidnapped at gunpoint the compound’s security officer, Lt. Col. Attaf Al-Sufyani, and a member of the guard.
According to the source, the management of the Judicial Complex sent a memorandum to the head of the appeal prosecutor’s office of Taiz governorate, demanding that the commander of the 22nd mechanized brigade and the soldiers involved in the attack be transferred to the specialized criminal court, so that they can be held legally responsible.
Judges confirmed that work at the complex would remain suspended until those involved in the attack were brought to court to stand trial.
